Documentation: LinuxMagic Debian Net Assist Install Our custom Debian CD will allow for a simple and hassle free install of Debian with SSH installed and setup. This will allow us to login to you system to setup the rest of your services with minimal intervention from you the user. First, make sure you have backed up any important data on the system you will be installing on. Make sure that the Bios are set to boot form the cd-rom. Insert the LinuxMagic Debian Net Assist CD in to the cd-rom and restart the computer. Make sure that the computer will boot from the cd-rom. 1. On start up you will be given 4 options to load, choose the first one and press enter. 2. At the "boot:" prompt press enter There will be some "Release Notes", select continue. You will now be shown a list of configuration options. This documentation will provide you with the standard configuration options. 3. Your first option is to configure the keyboard. a. Select "Configure the keyboard" b. Select "qwerty/us" 4. Now you must partition the Hard drive. a. Select " Partition a Hard Disk" b. Select the disk onto which you would like to install Linux. c. You will now have some choices at the bottom of the screen. Use the left and right arrow keys to select options. Move to the "NEW" option and press enter. If there is now "NEW" option then it means that your Hard Disk is already configured. d. "Primary" should be highlighted, if not select it and press enter. e. You will have to choose a size for your partition now. If you have more than 10Gigs of hard drive space then you make the partition 2Gigs. Anything less than 10Gigs the partition will be 1Gig. Enter the size of your partition and press enter. f. Now you will see "Beginning ", "End" and "Cancel", Select Beginning and press enter. g. Now you can highlight "Bootable" and press enter. h. Now you can highlight "Write" and press enter, and type, "yes" to confirm. Then "Quit" to return to the configuration screen. 5. Select "Do without a Swap Partition" a. Choose yes to confirm that you don't want a Swap Partition. 6. Select "Initialize a Linux Partition" a. Choose not to run the bad-block scan. b. Select "yes" you are sure. c. Select "yes" to mount the file system as "/" 7. Select "Install Kernel and Drivers" a. Choose the cd-rom as the install medium b. Press enter to continue, the disk should already be in the drive. If not put the CD in now. c. Take the default options for the directory used to install from. Press enter 8. Select "Configure Device Driver Modules" NOTE: if you have received a custom ISO image from LinuxMagic, please skip this step. a. Press enter to continue past the Note Screen b. In the modules screen highlight the "net" category and press enter. c. Find the driver for your card and press enter. d. Highlight yes to Install. Leave the command line arguments blank and press enter and the installation of the driver should succeed. If not then try another driver for your card. e. Choose to Exit now (twice) 9. Choose "Configure the network" a. Enter hostname b. Choose "No" to DHCP c. Give your system an IP address d. Enter the Netmask e. Enter the Gateway f. Enter the domain name g. Enter the IP of DNS 10. Choose "Install the Base System" a. Choose to install from network b. On the "Download URL" line type "http://www.linuxmagic.com/opensource/debian" and highlight ok and press enter 11. Make system bootable a. Select to Install LILO in the MBR and press enter b. Press enter to continue past the note screen. 12. Now choose to Reboot the system and skip making a Boot Floppy. a. Select Yes when you are ready to reboot the system. 13. When the system comes back up press enter to continue past the notes. 14. Time zone settings a. Yes, set clock to gmt b. Select your Region c. Select you Time zone 15. Password settings a. Yes enable md5 password b. Yes enable shadow password c. Press enter to continue past the notes 16. Root Account setup a. Enter a root password (make sure you remember this password) b. Enter root password again to confirm. 17. User Wizard setup a. Yes choose to create an account b. Enter the user as "wizard" c. The full name can also be "wizard" d. Enter a password of your choice e. Enter the password again to confirm 18. Final configuration and setup a. Choose to "Cancel" b. Select No. You do not want to run tasksel c. Select No. You do not want to run dselect d. Yes you will want to erase previously downloaded files and press enter to continue. e. Press enter to continue past the notes. Now we should be able to login and handle the rest of the setup for your machine. Call LinuxMagic at (604) 589-0100 and provide us with your IP address and the root and wizard passwords. We will then login and complete the setup of your server.
