Currently SMTP authentication is only supported in the commercial
version (against the database). The stubs are there for the
opensource version, but it has never been fleshed out. It is on
my todo list, but if anyone wants to check it out, the appropriate
file is auth_chkp.c. It should be setup with a control file to
specify a program which does the actual authentication (ala
checkpassword).

The INSTALL file lists the control files which can be created and
their proper values. Look for the "Control:" lines which indicate
the name of the control file. You should create a
/etc/magic-mail/control directory and place these control files in
there.
